A reed by any other name

Phragmites australis is that really tall grass you see whenever you're near the shoreline, usually right on the beach. PA does have a tendency to outcompete other plants, and it's an official invasive, but I can't bring myself to hate those purplish, feathery, drooping inflorescences that wave like plumes in the breeze. Human intervention has done a lot more injury to Mother than this stately perennial reed. Here's a stand of PA at Jacob's Beach this afternoon.
