Grumpy About the Weather? Let this Perfect Pomegranate Cheer You Up
Mother Nature and the isobar have been trying this girl's patience.
I’ve been waiting for tomorrow like a child waits for Christmas. Predicted
temperatures were 75 degrees for our area, but today, the forecast has changed dramatically,
and we’re expected to reach only 56 degrees. Plus, clouds. And endless cold
rain to come.
So, let’s just make it official: this is turning out to be
a second-rate spring. We planned on putting in the greens beds this weekend, and we
still might, but it won’t be nearly as fun and warm a day as we had hoped. And to speak the
truth, if tomorrow is a total washout – drizzling, cloudy, and cool - we’ll probably
postpone sowing greens seeds until it warms up.
Watching the weather has become a national obsession, but
no one tracks the weather like master gardeners. Our moods swing with the
forecast. We’ve been getting grim forecasts this month, and I can vouch for the
fact that gardeners everywhere in the Northeast are about as grumpy right now
as gardeners can get. Not cool.
But OK, here’s a chance to apply the teachings of the
precious Dharma. There is nothing over which we have control, so why stress about
it? Impermanence is the nature of all things. And once we start coveting something,
we learn the hard lesson of attachment. Don’t cling, even to dreams of the garden.
I’m going to indulge in a little frustration this
afternoon, and then get over it. The weekend can still be filled with good
things. My husband and I have a cool new Vietnamese coffee maker and coffee
from Vietnam, and I’m looking forward to trying both.
We have a recipe for jackfruit nachos that we’re going to
try, and that I’ll write about next week. There’s some indoor gardening prep to
do, and the gardening shed needs clearing out. He’s going to work on the boat
and get it ready for the season. We may still work in the food gardens. I have
books to read and friends to catch up with. I may take a trip to Wholefoods for
fresh turmeric root and a few ripe passionfruit. Maybe I’ll meet my bestie for
coffee. And then there’s naps.
Oh, and my waterskiing endorsement came in from the CT
Department of Environmental Protection today. So that’s happy news for me, even
if it won’t be for everyone else out on the water this summer.
And finally, there’s this perfect pomegranate in our fruit
bowl at home this morning. Something as immaculate as this could come only from
the blesséd hands of Mother Earth, who’s good to us even when we’re not feeling
the love.
I guess it’s all good.
