Hyacinths, the panacea for February
Amaryllis are nearing the end of their winter bloom cycles. Thankfully, the hyacinth bulbs I put in the fridge last September and then potted up in December are coming into their own. The heady fragrance alone is worth the effort. We're in February now, the true winter time, but in the house are banks of blooming hyacinths, virtually care free, filling the air with clouds of spicy/floral perfume. Here's a bunch of whites in the garden room. They say not to bother trying to re-force once-forced hyacinths the following year. Rubbish. I have a corner of the garden where I toss the bulbs once they're spent, and guess what? In subsequent years, hyacinths are blooming in the garden come spring. Don't underestimate the plants around you...
